The Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ola Olukoyede, urged Nigerians at the local government level to willingly provide information to the anti-graft agency about the use of their resources.
This call was made during a two-day workshop organized by the Kaduna State Ministry of Local Government, as conveyed in a statement by EFCC spokesperson Dele Oyewale.
Olukoyede, represented by Kaduna Acting Zonal Commander Aisha Abubakar, highlighted the importance of collaboration in combating economic and financial crimes. He stressed a commitment to focusing on preventive measures in addressing corrupt practices, citing their cost-effectiveness. He emphasized that reducing incentives for corruption minimizes crimes and criminal behavior.
He also emphasized the necessity of promoting fiscal discipline, transparency, and efficient resource management at the grassroots level to bolster local government administration in Nigeria.
According to him, “Nigerians at the grassroots should be willing and ready to offer information to the EFCC at all times on how their resources are being used. This brings us to the need for whistleblowing. They should be ready to join the EFCC in exposing corrupt practices in their midst.
“We will emphasize more on preventive measures against corruption. International best practices in the fight against graft put preventive frameworks on the front burner.”
Olukoyede also counseled local government officials to prioritize economic development in their areas by refraining from theft and financial misappropriation.
