Sadio Mane, the captain who led Senegal to victory in the AFCON and currently plays for Al Nassr, anticipates that the 2023 AFCON in Ivory Coast will be exceptionally challenging, considering it one of the toughest in the tournament’s history.
Mane, who guided Senegal to their first AFCON title two years prior in a penalty shootout against Egypt, emphasized to CAFonline that the presence of formidable teams makes it a daunting competition for the Teranga Lions.
His words: “We know it won’t be easy but we will be there to do our best and try to go through every round. We are expecting a tough competition. This competition will be one of the strongest since I started playing in it because all the big countries are here and they all have their targets, but we will see what will happen.”
He expressed that clinching the AFCON title fulfilled a lifelong dream and believes that securing the trophy in Ivory Coast will have a positive influence on Senegal’s football scene.
Senegal finds itself placed in Group C, competing against Cameroon, Guinea, and the Gambia. Their AFCON title defense begins against The Gambia on Monday, January 15, followed by a pivotal match against Cameroon’s Indomitable Lions three days later.
