Delta Fixes Deadline For Tax Return Remittance

Employers and self-employed individuals in Delta State have been given deadlines for filing their 2023 annual tax returns as per the Personal Income Tax Act of 2004, with January 31 and March 31, 2024, respectively. This information was conveyed by Mr. Solomon Ighrakpata, the Executive Chairman of the Delta State Internal Revenue Service, in a statement issued on Monday.

The statement emphasized the obligation of affected taxpayers to comply with the law, citing Section 81(2) of the Personal Income Tax Act 2004, which mandates employers to submit a return of all salaries paid to employees by January 31 each year for those employed in the previous year.

The statement read, “Taxpayers should note that contravention of this law is liable on conviction to a penalty of N500,000 in the case of a corporate body, or N50,000 in the case of an individual.

“As part of measures to simplify the tax administration process in the state, tax administration would be fully automated before the end of the first quarter of  2024.”

In accordance with this directive, he mentioned that the submission of annual tax returns would now be conducted exclusively through online channels.

Additionally, the chairman recommended that taxpayers utilize their self-service pages or portals on the website, providing detailed guidance on interacting with the revenue service.

He specified that the online filing of annual tax returns should include details such as Pay As You Earn (PAYE) payments made between January and December 2023, documentation proving directors’ tax payments spanning 2021 to 2023, copies of withholding tax receipts from January to December 2023, evidence of Business Premises/Renewal payments for 2023, proof of development levy payment for the same year, a copy of the lease agreement, and rent receipts for occupied office space, along with salary payroll projections for 2024.
