On Monday, President Vladimir Putin announced plans to intensify strikes on military sites in Ukraine following an unprecedented assault on the Russian city of Belgorod over the weekend.
The attack resulted in 24 fatalities and more than 100 injuries in Belgorod on Saturday, occurring in the wake of Moscow’s extensive offensive on Ukrainian cities.
“We’re going to intensify the strikes, no crime against civilians will rest unpunished, that’s for certain,” Putin said Monday during a visit to a military hospital.
He said Russia will press on with hitting what he called “military installations.”
“We are doing that today, and tomorrow we will continue doing it,” Putin said, almost two years into Moscow’s offensive.
As Ukraine reported an unprecedented drone onslaught by Russia on New Year’s Day, Putin labeled the Belgorod strike as a “terrorist attack.” He accused Ukrainian forces of deliberately aiming at the city center where people were gathered before New Year’s Eve festivities.
Furthermore, he reiterated his assertion that Ukraine serves as a tool for the West to resolve its issues with Russia and insisted that the “strategic advantage” in the prolonged conflict lay with Russia.
