A political controversy arose on Tuesday when a member of Parliament from Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s party brought a gun to a New Year’s Eve gathering, resulting in an accidental shooting.
Emanuele Pozzolo, a lawmaker for Meloni’s far-right Brothers of Italy party, acknowledged possessing the firearm, a reported 22-calibre North American Arms revolver, but stated that he did not fire it. The weapon discharged accidentally, causing a minor injury to the leg of a guest, who happened to be the son-in-law of a bodyguard of junior justice minister Andrea Delmastro, also present at the event.
“I confirm that the shot was accidentally fired from a pistol I legally held but it was not me that fired,” Pozzolo, 38, said in a statement cited by the La Repubblica daily.
An investigation is underway concerning the incident at the gathering in Rosazza near Turin, attended by approximately 30 guests, as per reports. However, opposition politicians expressed astonishment and outrage at the incident. Italy maintains strict regulations on firearm possession, despite Meloni’s party proposing last month to lower the minimum age for obtaining a permit for a hunting rifle to 16.
