Doctors In England To Hold Longest NHS Strike Ever

Beginning Wednesday, hospital doctors in England are commencing their lengthiest continuous strike within the seven-decade history of Britain’s National Health Service (NHS). Junior doctors, below the consultant level, will stage a six-day walkout, significantly escalating their prolonged pay dispute with the UK government.

This industrial action occurs during a high-pressure period for the state-funded NHS, grappling with heightened demand due to winter respiratory illnesses. Following a three-day strike just before Christmas, this walkout could involve up to half of the medical workforce on picket lines, substantially impacting nearly all routine care, according to the NHS.

Stephen Powis, the NHS national medical director, warned that January might present one of the most challenging starts for the health service. The strike starts at 7:00 am (0700 GMT) and concludes at the same time on Tuesday, January 9. The British Medical Association (BMA) announced this action after failed negotiations with the government.

The BMA rejected a 3.0-percent rise offer, citing uneven distribution across doctor grades and potential pay cuts for many doctors. Since March, junior doctors have struck at least seven times. Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and hospital leaders have criticized this action.

Health policy in Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland is devolved, with the UK government overseeing England. In Wales, junior doctors plan to walk out for 72 hours from January 15, while those in Northern Ireland have voted for potential strike action. In contrast, their Scottish counterparts have reached a deal with the Edinburgh government.

The NHS traditionally experiences a surge in hospital admissions in the fortnight following Christmas due to delayed treatment seeking during the festive season.

The service confronts substantial backlogs in appointment and surgery waiting times, attributed to both Covid-related treatment delays and years of underfunding.
