An undercover journalist named Umar Audu disclosed that he obtained his certificate from a university based in Cotonou, Benin Republic, as quickly as receiving a pizza, within a span of six weeks.
Audu, who works as a reporter for the Daily Nigerian newspapers, shared this information during an interview aired on Channels Television on Wednesday.
He said, “This certificate will be delivered to you just like you ordered for a pizza or something and you give them your location, and it is delivered to you. That was what motivated me to conduct this investigation.
“We have done a similar investigation in the past in 2018, which led to the government taking certain decisions. These things keep going on despite pronouncements by the Federal Government,” Audu added.
He mentioned that upon payment, the certificate was delivered swiftly, resembling the process of receiving a pizza.
Additionally, the undercover reporter obtained the school’s transcript, both carrying the genuine scan code of Ecole Superieure de Gestion et de Technologies (ESGT) in Benin Republic. Notably, both the certificate and transcript were available at an affordable cost.
Recall that Audu, in his investigative report titled, “How Daily Nigerian reporter bagged Cotonou varsity degree in 6 weeks,” exposed a booming certificate racketeering syndicate in neighbouring African countries like Benin Republic and Togo, that specialises in selling university degrees to willing buyers from Nigeria.
Due to his investigation, the Federal Government took action by suspending the accreditation and evaluation of degree certificates obtained from institutions in Benin Republic and Togo.
Speaking on the investigation, Audu said, “I never travelled out of Nigeria during this investigation.”
As per the issued certificate, Audu began his programme in 2018 and completed it on September 5, 2022. Subsequently, he utilized the forged certificate to engage in the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) programme without detection.
