Air Marshal Hasan Abubakar, the Chief of the Air Staff, has given the go-ahead for the introduction of a Group Personal Accident Insurance Policy covering all members of the Nigerian Air Force.
Although the Ministry of Defence has a Group Life Assurance Policy for military personnel, Air Vice Marshal Edward Gabkwet, the Director of Public Relations and Information for the Nigerian Air Force, clarified that this policy solely caters to the families of personnel who die in action and does not address medical costs resulting from accidents.
Gabkwet highlighted that this new policy is in line with the Air Chief’s leadership approach, aiming to maintain a highly motivated force by enhancing welfare measures and updating infrastructure.
The statement partly read, “While several insurance policies administered by the Ministry of Defence and the NAF Investment Limited cover all NAF personnel, they do not, however, adequately address some hazards and challenges encountered in the course of the careers of personnel.
“The need to review and implement a specialised insurance scheme designed to address these hazards and unique challenges thus became imperative.”
Abubakar emphasized that through the GPAIP, Nigerian Air Force personnel would be encouraged to perform at their highest level, assured of proper care in case of disability or death during military operations or accidents.
Gabkwet mentioned that the insurance company would offer compensation for bodily injuries, fatalities, disabilities, and cover medical expenses.
Gabkwet highlighted that the newly introduced policy would provide benefits to the families of personnel who die in action and also extend coverage to include medical expenses in cases of accidents or permanent disabilities.
“The GPAIP is all-encompassing, benefiting personnel, and families in the event of death as well as covering medical bills, compensation for temporal or permanent disability and death, among others,” Gabkwet added.
