In Abuja’s Lugbe Grade I Area Court, a 23-year-old security guard named Peter Elisha was sentenced to 16 months in prison for stealing three bicycles worth N1.9 million. Elisha, who admitted guilt to two theft charges, pleaded for leniency.
The Judge, Aliyu Kagarko, granted an alternative N60,000 fine to the convict, instructing him to compensate the bicycle owner with N1.5 million. Kagarko cautioned Elisha to become a law-abiding citizen and avoid further criminal activities. The judge remarked that the penalty would have been harsher if not for Elisha’s admission, saving the court from prolonged prosecution.
Earlier, the prosecution counsel, Stanley Nwaforaku, informed the court that Mohammed Aliyu reported the theft on Dec. 23 at Durumi Police station. Nwaforaku stated that on Dec. 17 at 6 am, Elisha stole three bicycles worth N1.9 million from Jonah Izuka residing at 316 Francis Okoro Street in Durumi, Abuja.
During the police inquiry, the convict confessed, leading to the recovery of one bicycle valued at N400,000 from Elisha’s friend, Ali Hassan. These actions breached sections 79 and 287 of the Penal Code.
