On Friday, Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp humorously remarked that he’s not overly wishing Mohamed Salah luck at the Africa Cup of Nations, recognizing the challenge of facing crucial matches without their top scorer.
Salah is currently representing Egypt in the Ivory Coast tournament, while Japan’s captain, Wataru Endo, will participate in the Asian Cup in Qatar.
Klopp acknowledged the potential for both players to progress far in their respective competitions, possibly leading to their return in the second week of February. He mentioned sending them off this week without overly emphasizing his wishes for their success.
“I said if I wish you good luck it would be a lie,” Klopp said ahead of Liverpool’s FA Cup third-round tie at Arsenal on Sunday.
“From a personal point of view, I would be happy if they go out in the group stage but that’s probably not possible. They can go on and win it.
“So it was ‘Good luck and come back healthy’. We have to deal with it and we will deal with it. I am pretty positive that we will find a way.”
Klopp currently lacks a fitting substitute for Salah, who operates on the right flank of the team’s attack and has netted 18 goals across all competitions this season. Although midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai was previously considered a potential replacement, he’s sidelined for a minimum of two matches due to a hamstring injury picked up during the New Year’s Day victory against Newcastle.
Despite this setback, Klopp, whose team leads the Premier League, remains optimistic that Liverpool can adequately cover the void created by Salah’s absence.
