The Arewa Youth Consultative Forum has urged for the scrapping of the proposed computer-based testing system in the upcoming West African Senior School Certificate Examinations within the country.
They believe this method would cause widespread student failures, especially in rural areas of northern states where computer literacy is limited.
Yerima Shettima, the National President of AYCF, emphasized in a statement from Kaduna that the CBT exams should have been a choice, allowing candidates to select between the conventional pen-and-paper style and the computer-based method. He argued that this flexibility would enable students to opt for the format they were more comfortable with and capable of handling effectively.
Shettima further noted that the Forum’s research in certain northern states like Zamfara, Jigawa, Taraba, Adamawa, Nasarawa, and Plateau revealed consistently high failure rates in CBT exams among students attending public schools, where computer skills were often not part of the curriculum.
He stated, “Even the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board CBT exams have placed underprivileged students in a predicament as they struggle to answer questions in a format they are unfamiliar with.
“Many students who failed the CBT-based JAMB exams last year argued that their failures were a result of systemic failures, including insufficient facilities or network failures during the exams. Additionally, a lack of proper and adequate computer skills, coupled with outdated desktop computers that are not properly maintained by CBT centers further exacerbate the situation.”
He emphasized that the request was crucial to avoid a significant increase in failure rates among students who should have equal and fair chances to succeed.
