Kevin De Bruyne returned for Manchester City in a highly anticipated comeback during the team’s dominant 5-0 victory against Huddersfield in the FA Cup’s third round on Sunday.
The Belgian midfielder had been sidelined since injuring his hamstring in City’s Premier League opener against Burnley back in August. He made his comeback as a substitute in the 57th minute at the Etihad Stadium, drawing chants of ‘Oh Kevin De Bruyne’ from the stands as he replaced Julian Alvarez.
De Bruyne’s entrance into the game coincided with City’s surge, contributing to their goals scored by Phil Foden, Alvarez, an own goal from Ben Jackson, another goal from Foden, and a strike from Jeremy Doku, who returned from injury as a second-half substitute. Notably, Doku’s goal was created by an exquisite lofted pass from De Bruyne.
Despite City managing without De Bruyne, his return signifies a boost to their midfield quality and will be vital as they aim to compete for the Premier League, Champions League, and FA Cup titles.
Following their triumphs in 2023, City’s ambition for more silverware in the new year is evident, and their comprehensive victory against Huddersfield marks a promising start towards achieving that goal.
Phil Foden opened the scoring for City in the 33rd minute, Alvarez added a second soon after, and De Bruyne’s appearance coincided with the third goal, scored by Oscar Bobb via a deflection off Jackson. Foden and Doku further extended City’s lead with clinical finishes, securing a resounding victory.
