Walid Regragui, the strategist behind Morocco’s impressive journey to the 2022 World Cup semi-finals, believes that at least ten teams have the potential to clinch victory at the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast, starting on January 13.
While Regragui’s Atlas Lions are considered strong contenders for the prestigious title, the former international full-back, aged 48, refrained from specifically naming the other competitive teams vying for the trophy.
Two years ago, Morocco made history as the first African or Arab nation, and only the third outside Europe or South America, to reach the penultimate stage of the global showpiece tournament.
The 2024 tournament is expected to be highly competitive, with six different nations winning the past six editions of the Cup of Nations, since Egypt secured three consecutive triumphs in 2010.
Here’s a brief look at some of the prominent teams and their prospects in the upcoming tournament:
ALGERIA: The 2019 champions had a disappointing outing in 2022 but are still considered among the top challengers, led by coach Djamel Belmadi and a mix of experienced and emerging talent.
BURKINA FASO: Despite not being a favorite, Burkina Faso has demonstrated strong finishes in recent appearances, showcasing potential with players in top European leagues.
CAMEROON: The Indomitable Lions’ form has been inconsistent, and while they exhibited strength by defeating Brazil in the World Cup, their performances against smaller teams in qualifiers raise doubts.
EGYPT: With Mohamed Salah leading the charge, Egypt aims for an eighth title, boasting an experienced squad but still chasing glory after recent finals disappointments.
GHANA: Although traditionally a strong team, Ghana’s recent form in World Cup qualifiers casts doubts on their ability to claim the Cup of Nations title.
IVORY COAST: Hosting the tournament comes with high expectations for the Elephants, managed by Jean-Louis Gasset, as they strive for a third title.
MOROCCO: After their remarkable World Cup run, Morocco, with a strong squad, stands as one of the favorites to secure a second African title.
NIGERIA: The Super Eagles possess a talented forward line but face criticism over team selections, particularly regarding the goalkeeper position.
SENEGAL: The reigning champions, led by notable players, have seen key members move to a less competitive league, impacting their chances of defending their title.
TUNISIA: Despite their long history in the tournament, Tunisia’s recent performances have not lived up to expectations, though they retain experience and talent in their squad.
