The Nigerian national football team, the Super Eagles, suffered a 2-0 defeat against Guinea’s Syli National in a friendly match at Abu Dhabi’s Bani Yas Stadium on Monday.
Despite missing key players like Victor Osimhen and Francis Uzoho, the team led by Jose Peseiro fell behind early in the 14th minute. An opportunity to equalize through a penalty kick for Simon Moses in the 20th minute was thwarted by the Guinea goalkeeper.
In the 64th minute, Guinea secured their second goal, doubling their lead. Peseiro made several substitutions during the game, with Calvin Bassey, Alex Iwobi, and Frank Onyeka replacing Kenneth Omeruo, Raphael Onyedika, and Chidozie Awaziem, respectively.
Further changes occurred in the 83rd minute as Ahmed Musa, Joe Aribo, and Ademola Lookman entered the game for Samuel Chukwueze, Alhassan Yusuf, and Moses Simon.
Despite the alterations, the Super Eagles couldn’t overturn Guinea’s lead, conceding a confidence-boosting win to their opponents ahead of the AFCON tournament, which served as Guinea’s final preparatory match.
The Super Eagles are scheduled to return to Lagos on Tuesday before heading to Cote D’Ivoire for the AFCON competition.
