Court Fines FG N100m For Violating Emefiele’s Rights

The Federal Capital Territory High Court in Abuja has ruled that the extended detention of former Central Bank of Nigeria Governor, Godwin Emefiele, without trial, violates his fundamental rights.

Moreover, the court imposed a N100 million fine on the Federal Government and the Economic Financial Crimes Commission.

Additionally, it prohibited the FG and its representatives from re-arresting or detaining Emefiele without a court order.

This judgment arose from a human rights lawsuit filed by the former CBN governor, contesting his prolonged detention by the Department of State Services.

He sought the court’s intervention to compel the respondents to pay him N1 billion in damages and prevent any further arrests or detentions.

Waffi TV reports that the former CBN boss was apprehended on June 10 shortly after his suspension by President Bola Tinubu.

The defendants listed in the suit were the Federal Government, the Attorney General of the Federation, the EFCC, and its chairman.
