Globacom Denies Owing MTN Interconnect Charges

Globacom Ltd, a Nigerian telecommunications company, refuted circulating reports alleging its indebtedness to MTN for interconnect charges. According to a credible source within Globacom speaking to Newsmen in Lagos, the amount owed, totaling N1.6 billion, has been promptly settled without any disputes.

This clarification comes after the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) issued a public pre-disconnection notice, signed by Reuben Muoka, the Director of Public Affairs at NCC, on Monday, Jan. 8, via their Twitter page.

The notice highlighted Glo’s failure to clear outstanding debts despite multiple attempts at resolution. Furthermore, the NCC’s statement emphasized that upon reviewing Glo’s application and circumstances surrounding the debt, they found a lack of substantial or justifiable reasons for Glo’s non-payment of the interconnect charges.

Part of the public notice read: “All subscribers are requested to take notice that the commission has approved the partial disconnection of Globacom to MTN.

“This is in accordance with Section 100 of the Nigerian Communications Act (2003) and paragraph nine of the Guidelines on Procedure for Granting Approval to Disconnect Telecommunications Operators (2012).

“At the expiration of 10 days from Jan. 8, 2024, subscribers of Globacom will no longer be able to make calls to MTN but will be able to receive calls.

The representative from Glo emphasized the necessity of conducting a thorough fact-checking process before jumping to the conclusion that the telecom company owed MTN.

“We are not owing MTN any interconnect charges,” the Glo official said.

The official further stated that Glo pioneered the introduction of pay-per-second billing, disrupting the monopoly held by other foreign telecom companies in Nigeria.

According to the Glo representative, the report alleging wrongdoing by Nigeria’s entirely indigenous telecommunications company, which has revolutionized communication accessibility across all levels, is inaccurate.
