Injured Boniface Ruled Out From AFCON

Victor Boniface, the forward for Super Eagles and Bayer Leverkusen, will miss the upcoming African Cup of Nations in Cote d’Ivoire due to a groin injury, according to Owngoalnigeria. This injury sidelined him from Sunday’s match against local club Al Gharbia and Monday’s loss to Guinea’s Syli Nationale.

“A scan was done today and the length of time he will be out of AFCON.  Victor Boniface will return to Germany, where he will begin treatment for the groin injury that is expected to keep him out for six weeks,” Owngoalnigeria reported.

The 23-year-old appears to have accepted his fate, expressing well-wishes to his teammates for the tournament. The Nigeria Football Federation is now expected to announce his replacement.

Initially set to forge a potent partnership with Napoli star Victor Osimhen following an impressive start at Bay Arena, where he netted 10 goals and contributed seven assists, the former Saint Union Gelloise forward will be missed due to his absence.

His withdrawal adds to the Nigerian team’s setbacks, joining midfielder Wilfred Ndidi who pulled out of the tournament due to a three-month muscle injury. Ndidi has already been substituted by Royal Antwerp player Alhassan Yusuf.
