Liverpool received a setback as Trent Alexander-Arnold, England’s defender, sustained a knee injury during last weekend’s FA Cup win against Arsenal, ruling him out for several weeks. Reds’ assistant manager, Pep Lijnders, confirmed the injury before their League Cup semi-final clash with Fulham.
Despite completing the game against Arsenal, the knee tear will keep Alexander-Arnold sidelined for an extended period. His absence poses a significant challenge for Liverpool, currently leading the Premier League and competing in the Europa League and domestic cups.
“First of all, some not-that-good news, Trent hyper-extended his knee during the last game,” Lijnders said.
“So he has a little tear in the lateral ligament of his knee and he will need time to recover. He had a scan and he will be out for a few weeks, so let’s see after that.
“He will get some rest and then hopefully he can come back to where he was.”
Following the League Cup fixture on Wednesday, Alexander-Arnold’s absence will extend to the Premier League match against Bournemouth on January 21, followed by the second leg versus Fulham three days later.
Liverpool’s schedule includes an FA Cup fourth-round game against Norwich or Bristol Rovers on the weekend of January 27, followed by a Premier League encounter against Chelsea on January 31.
Despite Alexander-Arnold’s setback, there was a positive update for Liverpool as assistant manager Lijnders confirmed the availability of Netherlands center-back Virgil van Dijk for the Fulham match, following his absence from the Arsenal game due to illness.
