NAFDAC Urges NASS To Speed Up Review Of Drug Counterfeiting Penalties

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) appealed to the 10th National Assembly to swiftly review penalties for counterfeiting. The agency pledged to decrease the prevalence of fake drugs and make illicit trade less appealing in Nigeria.

In a press statement, Prof. Christianah Adeyeye, the Director General of NAFDAC, advocated for penalties that discourage perpetrators without an option of fines. She highlighted NAFDAC’s attainment of ISO 9001:2015 certification and WHO Maturity Level 3 as it continues its battle against substandard medicines.

Despite facing life-threatening encounters and attacks on its officers, Adeyeye reiterated NAFDAC’s commitment to eliminating counterfeit drugs and substandard products from the Nigerian market. She addressed recent negative press by emphasizing NAFDAC’s intensified efforts to ensure the safety of drugs and food consumed by Nigerians.

Adeyeye condemned campaigns against NAFDAC, especially those aimed at profiting at the expense of citizens’ well-being. She highlighted the exposure of a cartel producing fake wines and soft drinks in Aba, Abia State, urging caution during the festive season to avoid potentially harmful substances disguised as inexpensive drinks.

NAFDAC’s Investigation and Enforcement (I&E) and Pharmacovigilance and Post Marketing Surveillance Directorates have been empowered to apprehend counterfeiters. Adeyeye assured the public that NAFDAC remains steadfast in its mission to protect the health of Nigerians and encouraged citizens to report suspicious activities.

Adeyeye urged consumers to scrutinize branded drinks or drugs before consumption. NAFDAC advises the public to consider the “4 Ps” before purchasing drugs, food, drinks, or alcohol:

“Place: Buy only NAFDAC-registered  drug and food products from reputable and licensed pharmacies, retailers, bars, and supermarkets.

Price: Be cautious of products sold significantly below normal prices or without proper taxes, as they might be fake.

“Packaging: Inspect for poor-quality packaging, spelling mistakes, and unusual bottle shapes. Check for the manufacturer’s contact information and address.

Product: Beware of unpleasant smells, as products smelling like paint stripper or nail polish remover may be unsafe.

“NAFDAC remains steadfast in its mission to minimize the circulation of counterfeit products, ensuring that Nigerians consume only healthy and safe products. The agency encourages the public to report any suspicious activities or illegal production of adulterated products to the nearest NAFDAC office nationwide,”  she added.
