The United States and the United Kingdom military forces intercepted more than 20 drones and missiles over the Red Sea that were launched by Yemen’s Huthi rebels, described by London as the “largest attack” yet by the Iran-backed group.
On Tuesday, the US military reported that their warships and aircraft destroyed 18 drones and three missiles during the intervention. The Huthis claimed to have launched a “large number” of missiles and drones at a US ship but did not provide specific details.
The British destroyer HMS Diamond utilized its weapons and Sea Viper missiles to thwart drones approaching the ship and nearby commercial vessels, according to UK Defence Secretary Grant Shapps.
This incident occurred following a warning from 12 nations, led by the United States, to the Huthis, urging them to cease firing on commercial ships in the busy international shipping corridor. The Huthis claim they are targeting Israeli-affiliated vessels in support of Palestinians in Gaza, amid ongoing conflict between Israel and the Hamas militant group.
“Overnight, HMS Diamond, along with US warships, successfully repelled the largest attack from the Iranian-backed Huthis in the Red Sea to date,” Shapps said in a statement.
Shapps later said on Sky News that there was “no doubt at all Iran is guiding what is happening there in the Red Sea”, providing Huthis with equipment and intelligence to enable the attacks.
“Enough is enough,” said Shapps.
“We must be clear with the Huthis that this has to stop and that is my simple message to them today: Watch this space.”
