Sa’adatu Ayuba, a housewife, has filed for divorce at the Dei-Dei Grade I Area Court, citing impotence as the reason, after 27 years of marriage to Jalija. The couple married in 1997 under Islamic law and has five children aged 25, 22, 14, nine, and seven.
She told the court, “I got married when I was 16 years old. I have never been with any other man before my marriage.
”Since two years ago, I have been having misunderstandings with him. This is because he got a girlfriend outside our marriage.
”He has not been functioning as a man. I am tired of the situation (impotence) and attitude, and want a divorce in the interest of justice.”
Jalija responded, refuting the petitioner’s claims and stating that the allegations were false. He also asserted that he did not have a girlfriend.
”I married another wife and I am performing perfectly as a man. The lady I married has one child for me, we got married in her village,” he said.
He asserted that he fulfilled his role as a husband genuinely. Nevertheless, the petitioner contested his statement, alleging that the woman in question was his girlfriend. She claimed unawareness of her husband’s marriage to the other woman.
Malam Saminu Suleiman, the judge overseeing the impotence and divorce case, granted the couple one week to resolve the matter amicably. The case is adjourned until January 17 for feedback.
