On Friday, the Supreme Court upheld Governor Dauda Lawal’s election in Zamfara State, overturning the Court of Appeal’s November 16, 2023, judgment that declared the initial election inconclusive.
The apex court, led by Justice Emmanuel Agim, deemed the appellate court’s decision as “perverse” and reinstated the Zamfara State Governorship Election Petitions Tribunal’s verdict, affirming Lawal’s victory.
The tribunal had validated Lawal’s win, dismissing claims by Bello Matawalle of the APC. INEC’s declaration of Lawal’s 377,726 votes against Matawalle’s 311,976 votes on September 18, 2023, was reinstated by the Supreme Court.
