Joelinton, the Newcastle midfielder, will be sidelined for a minimum of six weeks due to a thigh injury sustained in last weekend’s FA Cup triumph against Sunderland.
The Brazil international injured a tendon in his thigh during the 3-0 win over their local rivals, dealing another setback to Newcastle, currently ninth in the Premier League and facing challenges in their pursuit of a top-four finish this season.
“The prospects over the next couple of weeks aren’t good. It’s an injury that will see him certainly miss probably a minimum of six weeks,” Newcastle boss Eddie Howe told reporters on Friday.
“It’s a real blow for us because he’s such an important player. He’s had a very stop-start season, unfortunately, this year where he was so consistent last year in his selection.
“He’s got a problem with a tendon in his quad. Without going too detailed, it’s a very difficult place to get an injury, hence the timescale that he’s going to be out.”
Howe is considering a January transfer for Bournemouth striker Dominic Solanke to address Newcastle’s injury concerns. However, Darren Eales, the chief executive of the Saudi-backed club, disclosed this week that they might need to sell players before reinforcing the squad further.
The financial report for the year ending June 30, 2023, published on Thursday, disclosed a post-tax loss of £73.4 million ($93 million) for the Magpies.
