Super Eagles head coach Jose Peseiro has chosen Trabzonspor’s Paul Onuachu to step in for the injured Sadiq Umar of Real Sociedad in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). Umar sustained a knee injury during Nigeria’s 2-0 loss to Guinea in a friendly match in Abu Dhabi.
Despite initially being part of Nigeria’s provisional 40-man squad, Onuachu did not make the final cut but has now been announced as Umar’s replacement.
The Super Eagles confirmed Umar’s exclusion from the AFCON 2023 squad due to injury, with Onuachu taking his place. Umar will undergo further assessment in Spain. Nigeria will commence their AFCON journey on January 14th against Equatorial Guinea, followed by matches against Cote d’Ivoire on January 18 and Guinea-Bissau on January 22 in Group A.
