European Union (EU) foreign ministers are set to convene on January 22 to deliberate on the potential involvement of the EU in the U.S. initiative aimed at securing commercial shipping in the Red Sea.
Initial proposals by the EU’s External Action Service suggest the initiation of a joint European military operation, involving the deployment of warships and airborne early warning systems, potentially utilizing reconnaissance aircraft. Whether a decision on this deployment will be reached during the meeting remains uncertain as of Friday.
The U.S.-led Prosperity Guardian operation seeks to significantly enhance the international military presence in the Red Sea to counter attacks on ships, particularly by Iran-backed Houthi rebels amid the Israel-Hamas conflict, leading to increased avoidance of the route by major shipping companies.
