Oil Theft: NNPCL Discovers 83 Illegal Refineries In One Week

The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited reported finding at least 83 illegal refineries in the Niger Delta over the past week. Additionally, within the same timeframe, 15 unauthorized pipeline connections were identified, as revealed on the company’s X handle on Tuesday.

“In the past week, 15 illegal pipeline connections and 83 illegal refineries have been uncovered in the Niger Delta,” the NNPCL said.

As per a video accompanying the post, it was revealed that from January 6 to 12, a total of 211 instances of oil theft and vandalism were reported. Seven instances of vandalism, including one involving a wellhead in the Umuajuloke community in Rivers State, were documented. In Owerri, an active wellhead with numerous illegal connections was discovered. The week also saw nine cases of oil spills, primarily attributed to vandalism, with Ogboinbiri in Bayelsa State reportedly suffering significant damage from the spills.

“83 illegal connections were spotted in Rivers, Abia, Imo and Bayelsa States.

“In Abia, a drone shot showed pockets of illegal refineries in Owaza, while illegal oil connections were discovered in Olodiama, Bayelsa State and Obuzor in Abia State,” the NNPCL informed.

Five illicit oil storage sites were reportedly discovered in Central Boma and Cocoa Camp in Bayelsa State, with confiscated sacks of crude oil found in Iba Rivers State. Additionally, authorities seized 60 wooden and fiber boats in Akwa Ibom, Delta State, and Rivers State.

These incidents unfolded with eight in deep blue waters, 54 in the Western Region, 81 in the Central region, and 68 in the Eastern region. The NPPCL reported 22 arrests related to these occurrences.

Between December 30, 2023, and January 5, 2024, no less than 157 instances of crude oil theft were documented in the Niger Delta. The reported cases span various sources, including Nigeria Agip Oil, Pipeline Infrastructure Nigeria Limited, Maton Engineering Limited, Tantita Security Services Limited, NNPCL Command and Control Centre, Shell Petroleum Development Company, and government security agencies.

Despite the NNPCL’s firm stance against crude oil theft, the Federal Government disclosed that over N4.3tn worth of crude oil was pilfered in 7,143 pipeline vandalism cases over five years.
