Buildings Destroyed As Explosion Hits Ibadan

Yesterday, residents in different areas of Ibadan, the capital city of Oyo State, were alarmed by a loud sound resembling a significant explosion that reverberated across most parts of the city.

Unconfirmed reports suggested a potential loss of lives, but details were scarce regarding the cause or origin of the Ibadan explosion. Multiple locations, including a pharmacy and a restaurant, experienced blown-out windows.

As of the latest press update, the exact number of casualties remains unconfirmed.

Several prominent locations within Ibadan and its outskirts experienced ground tremors a few minutes before 8 pm. According to information obtained by Waffi TV, the intense sound shook the School of Nursing hostel at the University College Hospital, causing windows to shatter.

Residents in areas such as Ologuneru, Owalla, Isokan, Ekerin, Eleyele, and parts of Apete reported feeling the tremors. In Ologuneru, a building’s gates and fence shook but did not collapse.

Additional affected areas include Olodo, Apata, Iyana church, Sango, Agbowo, Bodija Housing, and others. Reports regarding the unsettling sound were conflicting.

The Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, in Oyo State, Mr Adewale Osifeso said: “Explosion around Dejo Oyelese Street Bodija Ibadan around 7:44 pm on Tuesday 17/01/2024.

“The cause of the explosion is unknown, and no casualty could be confirmed as the search continues.
“The Commissioner of Police Oyo State Command, in the company of some senior officers and other responders, is on the ground for on-the-spot assessment and rescue operation.

“The Oyo State Police Command has also deployed armed and plain clothing officers to forestall any breakdown of law and order.”
