On Thursday, two teenagers from North Korea were handed a 12-year hard labour sentence for watching Korean dramas (K-dramas).
The BBC reports show the boys being restrained with handcuffs in an open-air stadium surrounded by a large crowd of students. K-drama, short for Korean drama, refers to television series produced in South Korea, and the mentioned series appear to have been filmed in 2022.
The video includes a narrator saying, “The rotten puppet regime’s culture has spread even to teenagers. They are just 16 years old, but they ruined their own future,” BBC reports.
Presently, North Korea has imposed a ban on South Korean entertainment, including television programs.
Despite the potential for severe consequences, some individuals are daring to watch K-dramas, which have gained widespread popularity globally, notably in Nigeria. In 2022, “Alchemy of Souls,” a Korean drama, stands out as one of the most-watched series on Netflix in Nigeria.
