The Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPCL) documented 214 cases of oil theft between January 13 and 19, 2024, across the oil-rich Niger Delta. In a video released on Tuesday, the NNPCL revealed the discovery of 72 illegal refineries in states like Rivers, Bayelsa, and Abia.
Notably, Ogubolo, Rivers, witnessed the destruction of an illicit refinery. Additionally, 42 illegal oil connections were uncovered in Rivers, Delta, and Bayelsa, while 26 vandalism cases were reported and are currently under repair in Rivers and Imo.
“Two cases of oil spill caused by vandals were reported in Bayelsa.
“Eight illegal storage sites were discovered across several locations in the Niger Delta. Large oil pits were discovered in Isiokpo and Okrika, Rivers State,” it was reported
Likewise, reports indicate the discovery of oil-filled sacks in Oporomor, Bayelsa, Obuzor in Abia, and Ohaji/Egbema in Imo. The NNPC disclosed that 49 wooden boats transporting stolen crude were apprehended in Delta, Bayelsa, and Rivers.
Furthermore, there were eight cases of Vessel AIS infractions and seven instances of vehicles transporting stolen crude, with eight in the Blue Water, 28 in the Eastern region, 146 in the Central region, and 32 in the Western region of the Niger Delta, as per the visual report. Between January 6 and 12, a total of 211 incidents involving oil theft and vandalism were reported, including at least 83 illegal refineries in the Niger Delta.
