In a joint press briefing in Abidjan, United States Secretary of State Anthony Blinken announced an additional $45 million commitment to address conflict and promote stability in coastal West Africa.
The pledge aims to tackle security challenges arising from jihadist insurgencies in the region, with discussions on U.S.-African partnerships covering trade, climate, infrastructure, health, and security.
Blinken’s visit follows a December 2022 summit in Washington with African leaders and addresses key issues such as security challenges in West Africa, the aftermath of a coup in Niger, and Russia’s growing influence in the area.
During the briefing in Cote d’Ivoire, Blinken highlighted the commitment to supporting nations impacted by Islamist insurgencies originating in Mali in 2012, which have spread across the Sahel region despite international military efforts.
“We spent a lot of time discussing mutual security challenges,” Blinken said.
“We appreciate Ivory Coast’s leadership in the fight against extremism and violence.”
The additional funding will complement the $300 million that the United States has previously allocated to coastal West Africa in the last two years.
