The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has reassured its dedication to impartiality in the upcoming Delta House of Assembly Feb. 3 re-run election. Rev. Monday Udoh-Tom, the state INEC Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), conveyed this commitment during a meeting with state chairpersons of political parties in Asaba on Wednesday.
”INEC is not a political party; we are not sponsoring any candidate for the election. So, we shall remain neutral and conduct this election with a high sense of professionalism and neutrality,” he affirmed.
Udoh-Tom clarified that the re-run election in Burutu 1 constituency and Ethiope West Constituency was ordered by the Appeal Court’s decision on legal disputes stemming from the 2023 general election.
The election, set for Feb. 3, 2024, will take place across four polling units in Burutu II Constituency and 37 polling units in Ethiope West Constituency.
Udoh-Tom stressed the crucial need to inform political party supporters about adhering to the rules. He highlighted ongoing preparations, such as placing non-sensitive materials, engaging with various groups, coordinating with transporters, and staff training.
He appealed to political leaders to counsel their supporters on following the rules, avoiding animosity and violence. Udoh-Tom underscored the success of the 2023 general election through cooperation and urged a similar collaborative spirit for the upcoming re-run election.
Ensuring the use of the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS), Udoh-Tom mentioned ongoing activation and configuration for each polling unit. He called for cooperation and support to achieve the election’s success and objectives, emphasizing that winners would be individuals from Delta, not foreigners.
