FIFA has confirmed on Friday that Luis Rubiales, the disgraced former Spanish football chief, will face a three-year ban from the sport, as his appeal has been rejected.
“The Appeal Committee was comfortably satisfied that Mr Rubiales behaved in a manner contrary to the principles enshrined under … the FIFA disciplinary code,” said FIFA in a statement.
After the Women’s World Cup final in Sydney in August, Luis Rubiales, the former Spanish football chief, is set to face trial in Spain for allegedly kissing Spain midfielder Jenni Hermoso on the lips against her will.
Rubiales denies the kiss was forced and may appeal his FIFA-imposed worldwide ban from “football-related activities” at the Court of Arbitration for Sport.
Despite Spain’s historic Women’s World Cup win against England, Rubiales’ behavior led to a tainted victory and prompted widespread calls for his resignation. Coach Jorge Vilda was dismissed, and the fallout includes charges against others, including Rubiales, for alleged coercion and sexual assault. A Spanish judge has proposed trying Rubiales on these charges, stating that the kiss “was not consensual.”
