El Al, the national airline of Israel, announced on Friday its decision to discontinue direct flights to South Africa due to a notable decline in demand from Israeli travelers to the region and other destinations.
“From the end of March 2024, El Al will suspend its operations on the Johannesburg-Tel Aviv route,” an El Al statement said.
Shortly before the International Court of Justice (ICJ) is set to deliver an initial ruling on Pretoria’s case against Israel over alleged genocidal acts in Gaza, El Al announced the discontinuation of direct flights to South Africa.
The airline’s final flight from Tel Aviv to Johannesburg is scheduled for March 27. Numerous international airlines suspended Tel Aviv flights during the Israel-Hamas war since October 7, with several countries advising against travel to Israel.
South Africa’s case at the UN court has strained relations with Israel, which denies allegations of genocide in Gaza. The ICJ may issue orders related to Israel’s military actions in Gaza on Friday, but the question of genocide will likely take years to resolve.
