Wike Not Ready For Peace In Rivers, Clark Tells Tinubu

Elder statesman Chief Edwin Clark conveyed to President Bola Tinubu that Nyesom Wike, the former governor of Rivers State and Minister of the Federal Capital Territory Administration, is not inclined towards maintaining peace amidst the political crisis in the state.

Clark’s statement on Thursday in Abuja emphasized Wike’s ongoing activities as evidence of his lack of readiness for peace in Rivers State. Tinubu intervened by issuing an ‘8-point pact’ to resolve the crisis, urging the withdrawal of court cases, with Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his allies complying, including the recognised Speaker Edison Ehie.

According to the statement, “The expectation is that the 26 decamped legislative members who had filed cases in court, would have also done the same. But they refused, giving rise to the judgment delivered by Justice James Omotoso on January 22, 2024, stating amongst other things, the nullification of the 2024 Budget which was presented by Governor Fubara, passed and signed into law.”

Justice Omotoso’s judgment was based on the legislatures’ assertion that there was no evidence of settling the matter before him.

Ijaw leader Clark stated that this demonstrated Fubara’s compliance with Tinubu’s directive, violating the 1999 Constitution “for the sake of peace,” despite discontent among many Nigerians with the settlement terms. Clark emphasized that Wike, by acting against the Constitution, sworn to uphold as the Governor of Rivers State, cannot be perceived as promoting peace. He urged Tinubu to counsel Wike to let Fubara govern the State peacefully.
