As the center referee signals the start on Saturday night in Cote d’Ivoire, two formidable forces in African football, Nigeria and Cameroon, each boasting eight Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) titles, will clash in a Round of 16 match at the 2023 tournament.
Despite the Super Eagles allowing just one goal and netting thrice, some fans find their performances less convincing. While Nigeria comfortably secured a spot in the knockout stage, Cameroon faced a tougher journey, requiring a late comeback against Gambia in their last Group C match. This victory earned them four points and a Round of 16 berth as one of the best-performing teams in defeat, notwithstanding conceding six goals in the group stage.
Cameroon welcomes the return of captain Vincent Aboubakar after an injury spell, adding excitement to their lineup. Meanwhile, Nigeria has positive updates with the return of Kelechi Iheanacho from Leicester City, and both midfielder Alhassan Yusuf and defender William Troost-Ekong are anticipated to be fit for the upcoming game in Cote d’Ivoire.
Despite the Super Eagles’ struggles and the Indomitable Lions’ less-than-convincing performances, Saturday’s showdown marks the renewal of competition between these fierce rivals.
Cameroon, with five AFCON titles, holds a historical edge over Nigeria, having clinched three titles at the expense of the Super Eagles, including the memorable 2000 victory in Lagos. In total, the two teams have faced off seven times at AFCON, each claiming three victories and sharing one draw.
However, Nigeria has emerged victorious in their last two encounters at the tournament, securing 2-1 victories in 2004 and 2019, the latter leading to Cameroon’s elimination in the Round of 16 in Egypt.
