Scrap Mishap: IED Explosion Claims 6 Almajiri Lives In Borno

An improvised explosive device (IED) exploded in the Gubio local government area of Borno state, leading to the tragic deaths of six Quranic school pupils, commonly known as Almajirai in Hausa. Gubio Local Government Chairman, Hon Mali Gubio Mali, reported seven fatalities, including two unidentified bodies suspected to be suicide bombers.

The incident occurred on Saturday, January 27, 2023, when a metal scavenger unknowingly collected and stored various metallic items near a Tsangaya school. Unfortunately, within the gathered metal, there was an abandoned undetonated IED, which exploded around 2 pm, claiming lives and causing severe injuries.

Notably, metal scavenging had been prohibited in Borno State by Governor Babagana Zulum since July 2023 due to alleged vandalism of government facilities in abandoned communities.
