Tobi Amusan Breaks African 60m Hurdles Indoor Record

Tobi Amusan has set a new African indoor record by breaking Glory Alozie’s 7.82 mark at the 2024 World Athletics Indoor Tour Gold in Astana, Kazakhstan. The 26-year-old, reigning world 100m hurdles record holder at 12.12, showcased her potential with a 7.91-second semifinal heat before clinching victory in the event with an impressive 7.77 seconds, surpassing competitors like Nia Ali (7.89) and Sarah Lavin (7.91).

Amusan’s time has positioned her second on the global season’s top list, trailing behind Devynne Charlton of the Bahamas, who clocked 7.75 last week at the Corky Classics in Lubbock, Texas.

Furthermore, she has climbed to the 20th spot on the all-time world list. As the reigning Commonwealth Games champion, Amusan has accomplished the feat of breaking all three African records previously held by Alozie.

Her achievements include surpassing Alozie’s 1999 African Games record of 12.74 with a time of 12.68 in 2019. Subsequently, she broke Alozie’s 12.44 African record, running 12.42 seconds on her way to securing her first Diamond League title.

Remarkably, the sprint hurdler now holds records in Nigeria, Nigerian Championships, African, African Games, African indoor, Commonwealth Games, World Championships, and globally.
