NAFDAC has cautioned against importing syringes from abroad, warning that such actions could harm local pharmaceutical industries. The Director-General, Prof Mojisola Adeyeye, emphasised the need for the new executive of the Association of Nigerian Licensed Customs Agents to prioritise the country’s interests over personal matters.
She urged collaboration to address the rejection of Nigerian food in Western countries and commended a local pharmaceutical company’s significant investments in syringe production, noting the comparable standards to facilities in the U.S. or Europe.
Following the facility tour, she expressed deep concern upon entering the warehouse and witnessing a significant quantity of unsold products. With over 1.5 billion units untouched, she attributed the low sales to an influx of imported syringes, despite imposing a high import duty to safeguard the local market.
Adeyeye regretfully acknowledged intelligence reports indicating compromises at the port, allowing illegal importation of unregistered syringe containers. Referring to a publication by the United States Food and Drug Agency (USFDA), she highlighted concerns about the poor quality of some syringes from Southeast Asia.
Questioning the route of entry, Adeyeye wondered why these products didn’t directly enter Nigerian warehouses but passed through individuals. She empathized with manufacturers, expressing distress over the challenges of low sales despite significant investments.
Highlighting the vital role of licensed customs agents, she emphasized their responsibility in ensuring legal and safe import/export, as well as compliance with standards. The NAFDAC Director-General welcomed the familiarization visit, aiming to establish effective collaboration for the promotion of trade in regulated products both domestically and internationally. The visit is seen as crucial amid challenges faced by Nigerian food and agricultural commodities, experiencing rejection at entry points in foreign countries.
