The Nigerian Correctional Services in Warri South Local Government Area of Delta State has been granted permission to administer primary school leaving certificate and secondary school certificate examinations for inmates at its adult literacy centre.
An insider at the correctional facility emphasise that this approval eliminates the need to transport inmates for examinations. The National Examination Council’s approval, received in October 2023, covers both primary and secondary education assessments.
Additionally, there is a separate approval from the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education in Warri South Local Government Area to conduct primary six examinations for inmates within the center.
The informant mentioned that more than fifty inmates have already registered for the National Examination Council (NECO). Furthermore, nine inmates who took the exam last year, even before official approval, performed exceptionally well.
The source emphasized that this initiative plays a crucial role in the reform, rehabilitation, and reintegration of inmates into society. Additionally, it is anticipated to contribute to lowering the crime rate in both the state and the country overall.
