The Dangote Refinery, is set to import crude oil from the United States in the upcoming months. Traders have revealed that Trafigura Group sold two million barrels of WTI Midland to the refinery, marking the first instance of non-Nigerian crude purchase. This move reflects the significant growth in US oil supply, reshaping the global market and impacting petroleum-dependent economies like Nigeria.
The refinery, with a daily capacity of 650,000 barrels, recently began operations, targeting an initial processing rate of 350,000 barrels per day, with plans to gradually increase production to full capacity.
While the Dangote Refinery primarily secures domestic crude through an agreement with the trading arm of the state-owned NNPCL, it recently received its first shipment of Nigeria’s Agbami crude, facilitated by a trading unit of Shell. Subsequent deliveries included Nigeria’s Amenam, Bonny Light, and CJ Blend streams.
Earlier, the Dangote Refinery signaled its readiness to begin producing refined petroleum products with the arrival of the sixth batch of crude barrels supplied by the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation Limited (NNPCL) a few weeks ago. The final one million Agbami barrels, transported via MT ALMI SUN, completed the initial six million barrels consignment, marking the conclusion of deliveries for the commencement of operations at the world’s largest single-train refinery.
