The UK’s Labour Party has suspended British-Nigerian minister MP Kate Osamor for accusing Israel of genocide on the eve of Holocaust Memorial Day. Osamor has apologized for any offense caused. The chief whip suspended her pending an investigation, following criticism from Jewish groups.
Holocaust Memorial Day commemorates the six million Jews and others killed during the Holocaust, as well as recent genocides. Osamor, MP for Edmonton, shared a photo of herself at a Holocaust Educational Trust event.
She wrote, “Tomorrow is Holocaust Memorial Day, an international day to remember the six million Jews murdered during the Holocaust, the millions of other people murdered under Nazi persecution of other groups and more recent genocides in Cambodia, Rwanda, Bosnia and now Gaza.”
She later tweeted an apology “for any offence caused by my reference to the ongoing humanitarian disaster in Gaza as part of that period of remembrance”.
The Holocaust Educational Trust labeled her comments as a “painful insult to survivors of the Holocaust.” The Board of Deputies of British Jews deemed her remark “disgraceful,” and the Jewish Leadership Council accused her of exploiting Holocaust Memorial Day to criticize Israel. Shadow business secretary Jonathan Reynolds emphasized that equating the Holocaust to the situation in Gaza is unacceptable.
Momentum, a left-wing pressure group within Labour, criticised the suspension as an “outrageous decision” in light of a ruling by the UN’s top court. The International Court of Justice (ICJ) ordered Israel to prevent genocidal acts in Gaza but refrained from demanding an end to the war, with a verdict on the central allegation of genocide expected to take much longer, possibly years.
