Senegal’s AFCON Exit: Shock Defeat To Cote D’Ivoire In Penalty Shootout

Cote D’Ivoire experienced a significant shift in their Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) journey by eliminating defending champions Senegal in a thrilling Round of 16 match. After a 1-1 draw (aet), Cote D’Ivoire secured a 5-4 victory in the penalty shootout.

Their next challenge awaits in the quarterfinals against the impressive Cape Verde. Kessie emerged as the shootout hero, sealing the win after Senegal’s Niakhate hit the post with their third penalty. Notably, Senegal joins the list of consecutive AFCON holders unable to progress beyond the round of 16 since Egypt in 2008.

Despite a recent 4-0 loss, Cote D’Ivoire’s supporters displayed unwavering enthusiasm, queuing from the early hours to secure tickets in the central city.

Senegal joined the unfortunate trend of being the seventh consecutive Cup of Nations titleholder unable to progress beyond the round of 16, a curse unbroken since Egypt in 2008.

Despite a humiliating 4-0 loss to Equatorial Guinea last Monday, support for the host nation remained resilient, with fans lining up from the middle of the night to purchase tickets in the central city.

Following the record home loss, French coach Jean-Louis Gasset was dismissed. Despite an unsuccessful attempt to reappoint former coach Herve Renard, the Elephants opted to promote assistant Emerse Fae.
