Nigerian Soldier On N50,000 Salary Laments N70,000 Transport Fare For Family Visit

A soldier stationed in Maiduguri, Borno State, Nigeria, voiced his frustration on social media, sharing his disappointment at being unable to visit his family due to transport costs exceeding his monthly salary.

Despite a year spent in the bush in Borno State, he lamented that the round trip fare to his hometown is N70,000, surpassing his N50,000 monthly earnings.

Speaking in Pidgin-English, the soldier can be heard saying, “See wahala oo, the Nigerian Army gave me a pass to go and see my family as I spent one year in Maiduguri.

“As I left the bush, I reached the park and they told me that from here to my town is N35,000. I calculated it and going and coming back is N70,000 and my salary that I was paid this month was N50,000.

“I don’t have any option again, I’m going back to the bush.”

This draws focus to the current outcry over the insufficient salaries of Nigeria’s security personnel. On Tuesday, January 24, 2024, Senator Ali Ndume, the Senate Majority Chief Whip, voiced his apprehension about the low pay for security agencies, emphasizing that recruits earn less than N50,000 monthly.
