South Africa’s national football team, Bafana Bafana, secured a spot in the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) quarter-finals by defeating Morocco 2-0.
The victory came as a surprise, especially considering the previous upset where Cote D’Ivoire eliminated champions Senegal on penalties. Evidence Makgopa gave South Africa the lead in the 57th minute, and despite Morocco’s chance to equalize with a penalty, Hakimi’s miss added to their woes.
Sofyan Amrabat’s late red card and Teboho Mokoena’s free-kick goal sealed Morocco’s fate. Bafana Bafana will face Cape Verde in the quarter-finals, while Morocco joins other top-ranked teams eliminated from the tournament.
