Namibia’s President, Hage Geingob Dies At 82

Namibia’s President, Hage Geingob, passed away at the age of 82 in a Windhoek hospital, as announced by the presidential office. Geingob, in his second term, had disclosed last month that he was undergoing cancer treatment.

“It is with utmost sadness and regret that I inform you that our beloved Dr. Hage G. Geingob, the President of the Republic of Namibia has passed on today.

“At his side, was his dear wife Madame Monica Geingos and his children,” read the statement on X, formerly Twitter, signed by acting president Nangolo Mbumba.

After a routine medical check-up in January, Geingob’s office disclosed that a biopsy had detected “cancerous cells.” Initially elected president in 2014, Geingob held the position of Namibia’s longest-serving prime minister and its third president. In 2013, he underwent brain surgery, and last year, he had an aortic operation in South Africa. Geingob continued to receive treatment at Lady Pohamba Hospital in Windhoek until his passing.
