A British cargo vessel was targeted in an attack on the Red Sea, according to the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO). The incident occurred west of Hodeida in Yemen shortly after midnight.
Although no group has claimed responsibility, suspicions point towards Iranian-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen, as reported by the Associated Press. The UKMTO stated that the ship’s master observed a small craft on the port side before a projectile was launched at the vessel.
Fortunately, no crew members were harmed in the attack, and while the ship sustained minor damage to its bridge windows, it was deemed safe to continue its voyage.
Defence Secretary Grant Shapps reassured MPs that the UK would act in self-defense if necessary against Houthi forces in Yemen, following joint airstrikes conducted with the United States on Saturday. Shapps emphasized that the strikes were conducted within the boundaries of international law, targeting three military installations after careful assessment.
