Delta Assembly Urges Gov Oborewvori To Act Swiftly Against Herdsmen Attacks

The Delta State House of Assembly convened on Tuesday and passed a resolution urging Governor Sheriff Oborevwori to swiftly address the recurring assaults by herdsmen in various communities, particularly in Uwheru and its surroundings within the Ughelli North local government area.

Expressing deep concern over the escalating insecurity within the state, the Assembly implored the Governor to direct pertinent security agencies to confront this challenge effectively.

This resolution stemmed from a motion presented during Tuesday’s Plenary session by Hon. Spencer Owhofa, representing Ughelli North 2 State Constituency. Highlighting a recent attack by suspected Fulani herdsmen in Uwheru community resulting in fatalities and injuries, Hon. Owhofa emphasized the urgency of the situation.

Supported by Hon. Matthew Omonade, representing Ughelli North 1, the motion urged Governor Oborevwori to compel the State commissioner of Police and other relevant agencies to investigate, apprehend, and prosecute the perpetrators of the recent attack.

In light of the alarming situation, Hon. Owhofa rallied his colleagues to bolster security measures across localities through continuous patrols by a collaborative effort involving the Nigerian Police, Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps, Local Vigilante, and Community Security Corps.

Addressing the potential consequences of inaction, Hon. Owhofa cautioned against the looming threat of lawlessness and underscored the imperative for immediate intervention to halt the cycle of violence, harassment, and assault on residents.

Quoting constitutional provisions emphasizing the government’s duty to safeguard lives and property, Hon. Owhofa stressed the necessity for measures aimed at restoring peace and order in affected communities.

Numerous lawmakers, including the Majority Leader, Minority Leader, and others, voiced their support for the motion, expressing solidarity with the affected communities and urging swift action to address the broader issue of insecurity nationwide.

The Speaker, Rt. Hon Emomotimi Guwor, extended condolences to the people of Uwheru and instructed the Acting Clerk to transmit the resolution to Governor Oborevwori for immediate action.

The Assembly adjourned until Wednesday, February 7, 2024.
