The final of the ongoing African Cup of Nations in Abidjan on Sunday will feature a clash between Nigeria’s Super Eagles and Ivory Coast’s Elephants, where Sebastien Haller emerged as the hero with the only goal in Ivory Coast’s victory over the Democratic Republic of Congo. Haller, making his first start after injury, scored in the 65th minute, securing Ivory Coast’s spot in the final against Nigeria.
This marks Ivory Coast as the first host country to reach the final since Egypt in 2006, a remarkable turnaround considering their initial struggle in the group stage. Meanwhile, DR Congo faced a disappointing loss, missing out on their dream of reaching their first AFCON final since 1974.
Ivory Coast’s journey in the tournament, labeled “miraculous” by interim coach Emerse Fae, saw them overcome challenges, including a humiliating defeat and a subsequent turnaround in form. Despite facing suspension and lineup changes, Ivory Coast managed to secure victories, setting up a rematch with DR Congo, who sought revenge for their previous semi-final defeat in 2015.
