The country’s food crisis, compounded by rising inflation, has led the federal government to authorise the distribution of 102,000 metric tonnes of rice and maize to its citizens. Additionally, the government has indicated it may resort to importing additional supplies to address any shortages.
Mohammed Idris, the Minister of Information and National Orientation, made these announcements during a press briefing following the meeting of the Presidential Committee on Food Emergency at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.
He emphasised that the President has instructed that “whatever it takes,” food will be provided. This decision follows extensive discussions by the committee, prompted by public protests regarding the exorbitant food prices and other economic hardships.
