The Senate has given Wale Edun, the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, a seven-day ultimatum to provide details regarding the award and allocation of over N100 billion to companies involved in the Presidential Compressed Natural Gas (PCNG) projects. This request follows the disclosure of plans by the PCNG to allocate an additional N130 billion to undisclosed companies.
The Senate referenced a previous warning by the gas committee regarding the unauthorized expenditure of taxpayer funds on these projects without National Assembly approval, emphasizing the importance of compliance with the Public Procurement Act. Senator Jarigbe Agom Jarigbe, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Gas Resources, urged the finance minister to submit comprehensive records of the aforementioned disbursements and a list of companies involved.
This request stems from a recent petition by the Good Governance and Transparency Front, alleging irregularities in the disbursement process. The group also criticized the lack of progress in the PCNG initiatives, attributing it to the failure to involve gas development experts in project execution.
The committee said in the letter made available to journalists yesterday: ”I am writing to request for comprehensive brief regarding the utilization of the sum of N100 billion allocated by the federal government for the development of gas infrastructure aimed at providing Compressed Natural Gas, CNG, to Nigerians as an alternative to fossil fuels.
